What is it about?

The paper reports a survey among six psychiatry departments in South Korea around Daegu. Psychiatric staff was asked about their experience of, attitudes towards, and dealing with religious and spiritual needs of their patients. Participants were also asked to report on their own religious or spiritual attitudes and practices.

Why is it important?

The results show the tendency to exclude an important realm of psychic and behavioral life of patients in psychiatry from professional treatment. This does not seem appropriate nor professional.

Perspectives

More reflexivity and professional competence are needed for holistic, patient-centred psychiatric care which is able to consider religious and spiritual dimensions of patient care as potential resources and/ or obstacles.
