What is it about?

Vitamin C depletion is frequent and independently associated with almost two-fold higher risk of mortality in RTR. We show evidence that support the hypothesis that the beneficial effect of vitamin C at least partly occurs through decreasing inflammation.

Why is it important?

Vitamin C depletion is frequent among renal transplant recipients while being significantly associated with mortality.

Perspectives

This study holds the plea for Vitamin C surveillance in the post-renal transplantation setting care. Further studies are warranted to evaluate whether Vitamin C supplementation may open interventional pathways to improve long-term survival rates following renal transplantation.
