Why is it important?

Oral health decisions and interventions that are based on evidence can better respond to the oral health needs of refugees and asylum seekers in Canada. The results of this study is intended to serve this purpose and could be used to assess progress made in this health domain.

Perspectives

I my view, this will be the first comprehensive study on the oral health of refugees and asylum seekers in Canada. The fact that the study covers two provinces (Ontario and Quebec), that host over 80% of this population, speaks to the potential usefulness of the results at the national level. I am optimistic that we are in the right direction towards minimizing oral health disparities in Canada. I hope that our methodology can be replicated for other vulnerable populations within Canada and abroad.
