What is it about?
Poleward Transportation of mid-latitude warm-wet air is important for the equatorward outbreak of polar cold air and extreme cold surges. We find that the simultaneous blocking high pressures can bring much more warm moisture into the Arctic. The synergistic effect of blockings can accelerate the rapid phase transition of Arctic Oscillation and amplify the strength of cold air preceding to the cold surge outbreaks.

Why is it important?
A persistent strong cold surge occurred in East Asia in late January 2018, causing mean near-surface air temperature in China to hit the second lowest since 1984. Some extended range signals of the cold extreme is found: a) the double blocking synergy is responsible for the rapid and drastic change in the Arctic circulation; b) more double blockings extended into the Arctic in recent winters, which is conducive to extreme cold events.
