This paper identifies all the individual communities in the Far West Rand gold mining area in South Africa, and measures a set of social and economic indicators for each one. This highlights the extreme inequalities and major challenges around employment, poverty and education in South Africa.

Why is it important?
This is a novel approach to measuring the Sustainable Development Goals in the mining industry. It is also the first time all the individual communities have been described in a mining region, providing a baseline for future work on policy and planning for addressing inequality and social deprivation.
