What is it about?

The use of somatic hybridization to stack four genes (Rpi-blb1 and blb3) and R (R3a and R3b) into potato cv. Delikat.

Why is it important?

It is the first report on successful introgression of four genes from S. bulbocastanum into potato gene pool and demonstration of their presence (gene specific markers), functionality (DLA and RAUDPC) and response to specific efectors.

Perspectives

It was a great pleasure for me to collaborate with research groups I know for a long time but also with new groups. The results demonstrated that somatic hybridization and two back-crosses can generate pre-breeding lines integrating the genes and expressing them. Moreover the selected pre-breeding lines demonstrated good processing qualities for breeding potato resistant to late blight.
