What is it about?
Severalmethodsarecomparedforthedetectionofmovingcapillaryfrontsinspontaneousimbibitionexperimentswherewaterinvadesdryporousrock.Thesemethodsare:(i)thecontinuousmonitoringofthemassincreaseduringimbibition,(ii)theimagingofthewaterfrontmotionusingX-rayCTscanning,(iii)theuseofultrasonicmeasurementsallowingthedetectionofvelocity,amplitudeandspectralcontentofthepropagatingelasticwaves,and(iv)thecombineduseofX-rayCTscanningandultrasonicmonitoring.Itisshownthatthepropertiesofcapillaryfrontsdependontheheterogeneityoftherocks,andthattheinformationderivedfromeachmethodonthedynamicsofcapillarymotioncanbesignificantlydifferent.OneimportantresultfromthedirectcomparisonofthemovingcapillaryfrontpositionandthePwaveattributesisthatthewaveamplitudeisstronglympactedbeforethecapillaryfrontreachesthesensors,incontrastwiththevelocitychangewhichisconcomitantwiththefluidfrontarrivalinthesensorsplane.
