What is it about?
It is shown how experimental data from varied neurobiological and behavioral cognitive research with animals and human subjects support the view that thalamo-cortical and cortico-cortical neural interactions are combined at the level of cortical layer-5b pyramidal neurons so as to guarantee and regulate the state and phenomenal content of consciousness

Why is it important?
While most consciousness theories are either thalamo-cortical or cortico-cortical in terms of explaining the mechanisms of consciousness and as most theories deal with either state or contents of consciousness, the present conceptualization combines these views and, uniquely, is capable of mechanismically explain consciousness in its all basic explications.
