What is it about?
Our systematic genome study identifies ABC family efflux transporters which contribute to antifungal drug resistance in the recently emerged fungal pathogen of humans, Candida auris. Specific efflux transporters are shown to be upregulated during drug treatment and in multi-drug resistant clinical isolates, indicating that ABC transporters are involved in antifungal drug resistance of C. auris.

Why is it important?
One of the major issues with Candida auris in a healthcare setting is its multi-drug resistance and its ability to readily adapt to antifungal treatment. Our bioinformatic study provides a full list of ABC transporters in the C. auris genome, and identifies likely candidates of drug exporters among them.
