Why is it important?
This is the first study to to investigate the effect on voluntary Exercise on bone in a mouse model of lipodystrophy (lipodystrophy is a disease characterized by reduced or absent fat stores). The study also provides rigorous quantification of bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT). We were surprised to find that BMAT is present in these mice and that their bone-response to exercise is favorable. This is important from a clinical perspective for improving therapy and understanding of Seipin Lipodystrophy but it is also important from a mechanistic perspective to demonstrate that exercise induced bone formation occurs, despite the differences in BMAT stores.
