What is it about?

To truly understand how both mothers and fathers interact with their sons and daughters and how these interactions positively influence child development, psychologists need reliable and valid scientific tools. The goal of this study was to validate an observational tool called PICCOLO (which measures the quality of adult-child interactions) specifically focusing on fathers in Spain. PICCOLO was originally developed in the United States and had already been validated in Spain for mothers, but researchers needed to confirm whether it was just as reliable when assessing dads.

Encouraging a child to take the lead and tackle challenges is linked to better language comprehension, while teaching by naming objects, asking questions, and explaining things is connected to stronger expressive language skills. It gives professional a practical tool to guide families. The study found no differences in how fathers interacted based on whether their child was a boy or a girl. This is important because it highlights that positive parenting behaviors are universal across genders, reassuring parents that boys and girls benefit equally from the same loving, supportive interactions.
