What is it about?
This is a systematic review of published scientific studies to quantify the magnitude and identify and collate known risk factors and causes of death following childhood-onset epilepsy, and impairments of cognitive, hearing, vision and motor impairments, globally.

Why is it important?
By identifying known risk factors and causes of death following a diagnosis or identification of any impairment/disability in the five domains, it is possible to plan and implement scientifically proven interventions early enough to improve the prognosis including preventing premature mortality and improving the quality of life as well as other health and non-health outcomes.
Perspectives
This systematic review provides evidence that the risk of premature mortality is elevated among children with childhood-onset neurological impairment and disability compared to their unaffected peers in the general population. Survival of the affected children can be improved through early interventions targeting modifiable risk factors and underlying causes.
