What is it about?

Fragile X syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Its symptoms include hyperactivity, attention deficit, and deficits in social interaction. We use behavioral and transcriptomic analyses to show that impaired motivation, reward and substance use also are likely a part of the constellation of impairments associated with this syndrome.

Why is it important?

A full understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with Fragile X syndrome is essential for developing effective treatment options. Until now research in this field has focused mainly on social behaviors. Our study shows that motivation, reward and substance use pathways are altered in Fragile X syndrome and offer novel insights into the pathophysiology of the syndrome.
