What is it about?

We present a systematic review of potential adverse events reported during the use of mechanical ventilation in out-of-hospital settings. We analyze the rate and incidence of complications during out-of-hospital mechanical ventilation stratified by ventilation modality, mode of transport, and etiology

Why is it important?

Emergency medical services are increasingly using mechanical ventilation, increasing the risk of associated complications. Here we present a systematic review analyzing the rate and incidence of complications during out-of-hospital mechanical ventilation stratified by ventilation modality, mode of transport, and etiology. This information is vital because it allows prehospital providers to anticipate and prevent such complications and provides a comprehensive summary of available information focusing solely on prehospital or interhospital care settings. We highlight the possible benefits that this technique could offer to prehospital personnel as well as the drawbacks it could present.

Perspectives

Mechanical ventilation along out-of-hospital management is not free of risks able to odd patients’ clinical picture, hence knowledge about potential risks complications along it's use enables prehospital providers to anticipate and prevent such complications improving patients survival chance
