What is it about?

Sport is a high profile activity in Scotland. The Scottish Government attaches all direct funding for sport in Scotland to the National Sports Agency - Sportscotland. The funding for Scottish sport significantly dropped after the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The study is the first of its kind to specifically examine both expenditure trends and the choices made within this devolved area of activity.

Why is it important?

The first study to chart expenditure trends before during and after the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The first study to question the notion of austerity as the sole explanation for funding challenges to Scottish Sport. Our findings show that Post 2014 Commonwealth Games the funding for Scottish Sport dropped to 0.14% of GDP. The first study to chart expenditure trends on sport between 2008 and 2018.

Perspectives

Scottish sport delivers a number of significant social, cultural and economic outcomes and yet as a %of GDP the amount of money allocated to sport should arguably be higher. Furthermore significant opportunities exist if Scotland were to grasp, as Australia has, the notion of a sports diplomacy strategy - See Jarvie, MacDonald and Murray - Scottish Affairs
