The article considers the work of film producer Betty E. Box, covering the working practices that she deployed on three films she made with director Ralph Thomas and actor Dirk Bogarde: Campbell's Kingdom (1957), The Wind Cannot Read (1958) and Hot Enough for June (1964).

Why is it important?
This work draws on the Betty E. Box archive at the British Film Institute to present a new understanding of her as a more creative producer than previously credited. This is particularly the case in terms of her approaches to both casting (where Dirk Bogarde is considered alongside James Mason and Tom Courtenay) and location shooting.
Perspectives
This work was originally conceived at the Doing Women's Film History: Reframing Cinema Past and Future conference at the University of Sunderland in April 2011, so it was a very happy event to see the idea brought to fruition, albeit 9 years later!
