What is it about?

This is an open review of a pre-print published on medRxiv 2021.12.16.21267932, in which the authors report that a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine was sufficient to recall mucosal immune responses in subjects who had been previously infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Why is it important?

This finding shows that SARS-CoV-2 infection primes the immune system to mount recall mucosal responses to systemic vaccination, and indicates that enhanced protection against COVID arising from vaccination in previously infected subjects could be a result of this mucosal priming effect. In addition, it reinforces the role of mucosal immunity against SARS-CoV-2, which is a respiratory infection spread by airborne dissemination of droplets and aerosols.
