Despite its widespread use, the term lacks a standardized definition. This has led to various interpretations and implementations of Smart Farming. Some view it strictly as using digital tools in farming, while others see it as a broader philosophy encompassing sustainable practices and personalized management. Here's an in-depth development of that idea.

Why is it important?

Smart farming is a broad term that encompasses various technologies and practices used to improve the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of agriculture. There is no single definition of smart farming. Still, it is generally understood to involve using sensors, data analytics, and automation to collect and analyze data about crops, livestock, and the environment. This data can then be used to make informed decisions about everything from planting and harvesting to irrigation and pest management. Defining the concept helps clarify communication between farmers, researchers, and policymakers, identify the system's key components, compare and contrast different approaches to agriculture, and raise awareness of the potential of this technology to transform agriculture.

Perspectives

Writing this definition of Smart Farming has been an endeavor filled with intellectual stimulation and personal satisfaction. Indeed, this definition arises during my doctoral studies in collaboration with my colleague Ph.D. Diana T. Parra-Sanchez, while she works on the concept of technology adoption in SMEs. The journey began with an effort to clarify a term widely used but often without a formal definition (and sometimes confusing with concepts such as e-agriculture, precision agriculture, and digital agriculture, among others.)
