What is it about?

In this research we are using recent technologies to trace air pollution. Through developing heatmaps we trace the past exposure of our study population (patients and healthy subjects) to different types of air pollution. We went back assessing their exposure in the past 10 years and linked that to their disease profile.

Why is it important?

This research is important and timely since it proposes an approach that will enable us to estimate long term, chronic, past exposure to pollutants and correlate that to disease process. This was not possible before, but thanks to recent technologies e.g. remote sensing and satellite data, we can have better understanding of the disease process now.

Perspectives

What I like much about this research is the multidisciplinary nature. In complex diseases like Parkinson's disease we must encourage multidisciplinary teams to embrace the complexity of the disease and be able to provide meaningful causation.
