What is it about?

We investigated the relationship between well known Alzheimer's Disease biomarkers Amyloid-PET and Tau-PET with our new marker derived from functional MRI. Our new marker measures how complex the brain function is in a specific brain area. We found that fMRI-complexity is strongly associated with Tau but not Amyloid and that this association is stronger in patients with genetic risk for Alzheimers.

Why is it important?

fMRI-complexity is a new way to measure deficits in the brain of patients at-risk or with Alzheimer's disease that does not involve injection of radioactive substances used in PET imaging. fMRI-complexity might become a screening tool in the future to identify deficits in brain function associated with tauopathy.
