Episodic memory has been largely considered an early marker of Alzheimer dementia. The paper shows that Semantic memory, assessed by Category fluency Task, may help in identifying MCI patients that will develop Alzheimer's disease earlier than Episodic memory tasks

Why is it important?
The need for early diagnosis of AD is critical for planning preventive strategies and for treating patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease with potential disease-modifying therapies. The availability of tests that intercept MCI patients who will progress to AD at an early stage could allow these treatments to be anticipated
