What is it about?

Management of chronic pain is very challenging and new, simple, more effective, less costly, and safe exercise approaches to promote more effective management strategies are needed. The study tests whether adding specific breathing techniques to chronic lower back pain exercises increases their effectiveness.

Why is it important?

The group that did exercises with breathing techniques showed improvements in pain, disability, and confidence in managing their pain that were big enough to make a real difference in daily life. The group that did the exercises without breathing techniques didn’t show similar improvements. Overall, the breathing group did better in most multidimensional chronic pain-related outcomes, because 9 out of 11 measures showed greater progress.

Perspectives

Synchronized breathing could be one option to increase the effectiveness of exercise therapy, which is the most clinically used treatment modality for chronic pain.
