Why is it important?

Our analysis reveals that indicators of wealth (GDP per capita) and inequality (employment rate) are minor determinants of trust in official statistics. Interestingly the country’s accession to the EU significantly increases trust in official statistics among its population, suggesting that supra national regulations, their enforcement and surveillance by the EU-authorities play a very important role.

Perspectives

The authors of the article hope that future research on how people perceive official communications regarding number and statistics will become a growing research topic. In the area of fake news, building individual trust in number and official communications is an important feature for the well-functioning of the society.
