What is it about?

Previously, intracranial arachnoid cysts at the area around the pituitary gland are mainly subject of surgical decompression of cysts and relief of associated hydrocephalus. The endocrinological aspect, esp. its long-term outcome is not investigated well though the location of the cyst is very relevant to the function of pituitary gland, which is one of the main centers in endocrinological control in our body.

Why is it important?

The location of the cyst is very relevant to the function of pituitary gland. Neglect of endocrinological dysfunction occured at delayed fashion may be harmful to the patients. The endocrinological dysfunction of delayed onset occurs in cases with successful decompression of the cyst and relief of hydrocephalus or in cases with spontaneous resolution of the problems no matter it is associated with hydrocephalus or not.

Perspectives

Further attention to the long term endocrinological outcome in these patients will provide the patients with safe medical surveillance even in cases with 'successful' morphological outcomes.
