What is it about?

This paper examines a potential treatment of severe brain swelling using an osmotic transport device. Our device reduces mortality from brain swelling in mice.

Why is it important?

The only available treatment for severe brain edema is to open the skull. There are a number of risk factors for this treatment, including a long treatment time which increases infection chance. We propose to use a device in combination with the craniectomy (opening of the skull) to greatly reduce the length of treatment for severe brain swelling.

Perspectives

This device combines with the gold standard treatment and may reduce treatment length, complications of the gold standard, and reduce morbidity and mortality from severe brain swelling.
