What is it about?

This article is a reply to an article in BMJ [British Medical Journal] Global Health lauding the Sri Lankan government's ''successful'' responses to COVID-19. We provide statistical evidence that Sri Lanka had the highest death caused by COVID-19 per million population among the eight South Asian countries and therefrom argue that the claim by the authors of the article in BMJ Global Health [a group of scholars from medical sciences] was either an oversight or underreporting.

Why is it important?

Corrections to scientific claims are sine qua non to make scientific evidence trustworthy for peers as well as the general public. It is in the public interest that this reply gains significance. Moreover, our reply was an example of cross-disciplinary scholarly engagement, which enhances scientific knowledge.

Perspectives

This co-authored publication, along with a group of my mentees and students, inculcates critical thought to emerging young scholars in economics in particular and social sciences in general. It is also an example of exchange of ideas based on solid evidence among different disciplinary scholars.
