What is it about?

UK faces obesity crisis born from decades of failed policy Since Ancient Rome, bathing signals civilization and is UK no 1 sport but access is inequitable Explored cross-sectional data and found significant association between dearth of swimming pools and excess deaths Time series models based on 120 years data confirmed underinvestment Qualitive case studies intimate, if not covert and unconscionable public asset stripping or 'accumulation by dispossession', then definitely underinvestment

Why is it important?

Britain needs investment in health and resilience infrastructure. Underlying its mishandled COVID-19 response, the nation faces a chronic obesity crisis, exacerbated by inadequate sports facility investment that probably is more detrimental to public health than COVID-19. Local investment is needed in new pools, cycle lanes, dance studios, grassroots football pitches etc. As well as its health facilities and resilient infrastructure 'call to arms', the study provides a practical template for mixed methods research.

Perspectives

Where I grew up in Bromley (South East London) we had a great outdoor pool that kids enjoyed every summer. Council sold it off to private developers who turned it into an exclusive health club - unethical, unconscionable and utterly remiss. Shame on you!
