What is it about?

Although the Indochina War ended over 66 years ago, it provides useful metaphors for today's fiscal and ecological crises. The French were slow to adapt to new strategic realities as we too have not adjusted to the realities of fiscal imbalances or the climate crisis. Then, as now, vested interests resisted change and masked their unearned privilege with hubris.

Why is it important?

Adjustments are needed to make the current economic system fit for purpose. These include a fairer tax system with higher effective tax rates for monopolistic corporations to help finance ecological transition.

Perspectives

The COVID crisis has highlighted system fragility, disparities and the lack of recognition for key workers. Rather than clapping and other gestures, we need to address substantive issues of inequity, hubris and unsustainability.
