What is it about?

Erbium YAG laser is used in gynecology as a surgical tool for many years, but relatively recently a special modality of this laser - nonablative Somooth mode was found to be an excellent tool for minimally invasive therapy in female pelvic floor dysfunctions like are stress urinary incontinence (SUI), pelvic organ prolapses (POP), vaginal laxity / Vaginal relaxation syndrome (VRS) and genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).

Why is it important?

There is a need for minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment of female pelvic floor dysfunctions and this nonablative ErYAG laser option is showing efficacy and safety in treatments of SUI, POP, GSM and VRS presenting thus a valuable alternative to more aggressive and less safe procedures.

Perspectives

I believe this article is clearly explaining the role and mechanism of action of non-ablative ErYAG laser on vaginal mucosa, which is quite different from any other laser used in similar indications. Most of other lasers are doing micro-ablative injuring of vaginal mucosa provoking through the process of wound healing the restoration of the tissue, while Smooth mode Erbium delivers only very controlled warming of the vaginal mucosa (without injuries) producing collagen remodeling, neocolagenesis and neoangiogenesis. In past ten years Smooth mode ErYAG proved to be really gentle, safe and efficacious method for treatments of various pelvic floor dysfunctions.
