What is it about?

It is a difficult decision that many GPs have to make: should they commit a person or not? In this study, we interview a sample of Norwegian doctors about their experiences.

Why is it important?

More than half of the doctors had felt pressured/adviced to refer the patient to hospital and about half had felt pressured/adviced to commit (ie refer the patient against his/her will).

Perspectives

Patients’ families and the Police may play an important role in many involuntary admissions.
