What is it about?

To investigate the impact of migration on the spread of religions this article examines the presence of East Asian religions in Latvia. East Asian religions reached Latvia, due to the local population’s interest in Eastern religions. Those interested had prepared the ground for missionaries from East Asia. However, a decisive role was played by several spiritual leaders of Latvian descent, who had returned to their fatherland even for only short periods and addressed those interested in Latvian. In this way, the entrance of East Asian religions into Latvia was determined not by immigration, but rather return migration.

Why is it important?

The role of the diaspora in the popularization of East Asian religions in Latvia, as well as the activities of religious groups are analyzed using methods of cultural anthropology and sociology of religion. The results showed that migration did not become an instrument for the transmission of East Asian religions due to the small number of immigrants to Latvia.

Perspectives

The results showed that migration did not become a tool for the transmission of East Asian religions. The popularization of religions has not been marked in the activities of the Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese diaspora. The entry of East Asian religions into Latvia has taken place through return migration.
