What is it about?

Imagine a group of small businesses in Colombia, each striving to stay competitive and grow in a world increasingly driven by technology. This is where our story begins, with a special focus on the Internet of Things (IoT), a technology that connects everyday devices to the Internet, allowing them to communicate and work together. The central characters in our narrative are the Chief Information Officers (CIOs) of these businesses. They are the tech wizards, the guides leading their companies through the maze of digital transformation. Their mission is to harness the power of IoT to revamp how these businesses operate, making them more efficient, innovative, and ready for the future. But this journey isn't a solo endeavor. The Colombian government plays a crucial role, acting as a supportive partner. They're not just onlookers; they're actively creating policies and programs that help these businesses embrace new technologies. This includes providing financial support and training, making the path to digital transformation smoother and more accessible. The story also highlights the power of teamwork. It's not just businesses transforming independently; a collaborative spirit involves universities, government, and industry. Together, they're building a digital ecosystem where innovation thrives and new opportunities are created.

Why is it important?

Our work delves into an underexplored but critical aspect of technological advancement in the business world, specifically focusing on the role of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Colombia as they navigate the emerging terrain of the Internet of Things (IoT). Our study is unique and timely because it focuses on a developing country context, offering insights into how these businesses adapt to digital transformations, an area often overshadowed by research centered on larger corporations or developed economies. The distinctiveness of our work lies in its practical approach to IoT implementation in SMEs. This sector forms the backbone of the Colombian economy but often lacks the resources and expertise to harness the full potential of digital technologies. By highlighting the pivotal role of CIOs in these transformations, our study sheds light on the strategic importance of leadership and vision in successfully adopting IoT. Moreover, our research is timely in the context of the rapid digital evolution that the global economy is currently experiencing. With the increasing prevalence of IoT and its potential to revolutionize business operations, understanding the dynamics of its implementation in SMEs in a developing country offers valuable lessons and models that can be replicated in similar economies worldwide. The impact of our work could be significant in guiding policymakers, educational institutions, and industry leaders in developing strategies that support SMEs in their digital transformation journeys. By increasing readership, we aim to contribute to a broader understanding and discussion of how SMEs in developing countries can effectively leverage emerging technologies like IoT, ultimately leading to more inclusive and sustainable technological advancement globally.

Dr. Parra-Sanchez's insights into how IoT can be a catalyst for SMEs to not only adapt but also excel in the face of industrial revolutions are profound. Her passion for this subject matter has been a driving force in our research. It’s clear that to truly enhance the competitiveness and global presence of these companies, a deep understanding of IoT and its practical applications is essential.
