What is it about?

The form of traditional proverbs in Nuosu, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in southwest China show particular, artistic ways that the language encapsulates thoughts. The aesthetic features Nuosu language uses make their proverbs memorable and transmissible across generations. Some of these features are shared with neighboring languages, and some are unique to the Nuosu.

Why is it important?

Findings from this study provide a deeper understanding of the Nuosu language as well as a window into linguistic aesthetic features shared with languages in the region and beyond. This research adds to our understanding of the breadth of strategies that languages employ in order to animate discourse.

Perspectives

Every language and culture captures some of their core values and history in proverbs. Nuosu proverbs give us insight into the language and culture of this community. Looking at how the Nuosu language crafts their proverbs teaches us a little more about human languages and how they use artistic ways to encode meaning.
