What is it about?

Type 2 diabetes is a growing global health problem, largely caused by high sugar intake that damages the body’s ability to make and use insulin. This review looks at tropical herbs that may help control blood sugar levels in natural ways. Common plants like bitter melon, curry tree, garlic, ginger, and noni contain natural compounds that support the body’s insulin system, reduce sugar absorption, and help keep blood sugar balanced. We also analysed published research to identify the most studied herbs, the locations of research, and emerging new ideas. Our findings highlight the potential of tropical herbs as part of future treatments for type 2 diabetes and show where global research in this field is heading.

Why is it important?

Finding safe, affordable, and effective ways to manage diabetes is crucial, especially in countries where access to medicine is limited. Herbal remedies may offer additional options for people living with diabetes and support future drug discovery.

Perspectives

We believe this topic is important because type 2 diabetes is growing rapidly in tropical regions, where traditional herbs are already part of daily diets and local medicine. By reviewing their bioactive compounds and effects on gut health, our team aims to highlight their potential not just for managing blood sugar, but also for inspiring new, affordable therapies. This work can help bridge traditional knowledge with modern science.
