What is it about?
A fragmented Europe, where different nationalities and languages co-exist alongside each other, needs education that renders it possible for its citizens to navigate it. Within this global and contemporary context, critical thinking would appear to be a highly necessary tool in order to comprehend other people’s perspectives and to achieve the effective co-existence of different cultures. Foreign language learning presents an excellent scenario for this reality. Music videos appear to be an appropriate instrument for developing this civic awareness, which is crystallised within the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture by the Council of Europe (2018). Hence, this paper seeks to present an active methodology to develop democratic competences by means of a mediated language learning experience among peers. Accordingly, this proposal furnishes a student’s guide to analyse music videos.
