What is it about?
Previous research has shown that freely floating wingtips can reduce aircraft loads during gusts and turbulence. Adding a control surface to these devices can further reduce the loads; however, control surface typically exhibit freeplay (or blacklash) which can alter the stability of the aircraft. This paper experimentally explores how control surface freeplay can affect the stability of systems incorporating floating wingtips.
