What is it about?
Vortices generated by heavy aircraft pose a threat to other aircraft sharing their runway in an airport. We perform laboratory experiments using state of the art measurement technology to study how vortices behave when they are generated by wings of different shapes.

Why is it important?
The vortex wake hazard is an unsolved problem of aeronautics since the introduction of large transport jets. Recent analytical research has uncovered instability mechanisms in the flow that could prove to be a more energy-efficient solution to hasten the natural dissipation of vortices. This work joins other research efforts to put these theoretical discoveries into practice.
