What is it about?

A more electric aircraft is a generation of aircraft that use electrical energy in the majority of components and devices on-board including flight controls and even propulsion. Due to the change of paradigm with respect to conventional aircraft design where pneumatic and hydraulic powers have a significant role, this article explores the idea of designing an electrical network considering minimum weight such that energy consumption is more efficient and has less carbon footprint. The network is the interconnection of selected components that allows generation, transmission, and conversion of electrical energy.

Why is it important?

Increased awareness on the impact of pollution on health quality that will be experienced in the future, significant efforts are being made to produce disruptive technologies that could help in he innovation of aircraft and aerospace operations. Given that the electrical system is the backbone that allows generation and consumption of efficient non-polluting electrical energy, attention towards a minimum weight-, minimum cost-, maximum efficiency- and reliability- power system is being made.

Perspectives

The construction of a power system requires understanding of the functional requirements of the airplane. Because there is a huge number of components, the design must be performed at a system level in the first stage, so that the design space can be explored in a reasonable amount of time. This research is a step further to produce a power system that is closer to a physical implementation.
