What is it about?

Aircraft icing is one of the most dangerous weather hazards faced by the aviation industry. We evaluate the effects of surface coatings with different hydrophobicity and icephobicity on the performance of a hybrid anti-/de-icing system that integrates surface heating with hydrophobic or icephobic coating for aircraft icing mitigation. We found that surface wettability would play a more dominant role than icephobicity in determining the performance of the hybrid anti-/de-icing system for aircraft icing protection.
