What is it about?
Modern tactical aircraft, such as F35-B, are designed with an emphasis on enhanced maneuvering capabilities. With the application of Short take-off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) configuration and proper thrust vectoring, aircraft can take-off and land within constrained spaces, unlike the conventional mode of operation. One such STOVL configuration of interest involves a pair of closely spaced jets generating the lift forces required for the aircraft, that impinge on to a ground surface. Supersonic impinging jets are known to exhibit strong unsteadiness levels and acoustic signature, especially when resonance dominates. The present study highlights the flow physics associated with single and dual impinging jets.
