What is it about?

The noise radiated by supersonic heated jets with thermally uniform exhaust profiles are compared to heated jets with an axisymmetric concentration of locally lower temperature flow around the centerline. Despite small perturbations in the mean flow, surprisingly large reductions in the radiated noise field were observed.
