What is it about?
Safety assessment is a critical aspect in the design and development of aircraft. The development of novel aircraft technologies such as hybrid-electric or distributed electric aircraft require can benefit from early application of safety assessment techniques to determine if aircraft system architectures are feasible. These early safety assessments need to be performed in a systematic manner which is conducive to later development downstream. We present a method in which a specific safety assessment methods, namely the Functional Hazard Assessment is performed in parallel with the development of the system. Our approach ensures that the system architect and the safety analyst- two disciplines that were traditionally siloed can now communicate and arrive at a wholistic design of the system architecture that is enriched with safety considerations even at the concept stage of design. Our approach also demonstrates how safety related information can be captured within a system model at the conceptual design phase.
