What is it about?
The purpose of this research is to attempt to go beyond pilot model identification based on collected experimental data and to develop a a real-time indicator of pilot behavior changes from predicted estimates of stick input.

Why is it important?
With this capability to estimate pilot actions comes the ability to detect unexpected changes. If the change is due to a non-normal aircraft, then on-board automation may be able to aid the pilot in determining the changing capabilities of the aircraft and to try to help alleviate any issues such as by automatically completing electronic checklists. If it is due to the pilot, then on-board automation may be able to aid the pilot by changing workload. This methodology of characterizing the pilot may lead to a safer national airspace system by being able to detect behavioral changes of the pilot-aircraft-atmospheric system.
