What is it about?

The unsteady numerical simulations were carried out in an axial flow fan with trapezoidal slots as a casing treatment. It is expected that as compared to other conventional slots, the trapezoidal slots substantially increase the momentum of the flow leaving the slots. The obtained results demonstrate the same.

Why is it important?

The delay/prevention of the stall inception is crucial in axial flow fans and compressors. Early stall inception reduces the operational range of the axial fan and drops the exit pressure. The incorporation of the trapezoidal slots shifted the tip leakage trajectory toward the suction surface of the blade. This led to a stall margin improvement of 23.4%.

Perspectives

The trapezoidal slots significantly influence the flow-field in the tip region. The addition of momentum due to the casing treatment reduces the blade loading and the diffusion factor in the tip region and shifts the tip leakage trajectory toward the blade suction surface.
