What is it about?
We have investigated a propulsion system of civil aircraft comprising of a low pressure ratio propulsor and a short engine intake/nacelle. The focus was on fan flutter, a self excited aeroelastic instability, and how the presence of the intake affects this instability due to an acoustic feedback loop. This effect is often not considered, in particular during the design phase and may largely impact the flutter characteristics. We applied analytical methods and efficient numerical methods and combined those to help future designs mitigating this additional risk of structural failure.
