What is it about?
Air travel constitutes a non-negligible source of greenhouse gas emissions. This study explores alternative fuels as a means of reducing aviation’s climate impact, using advanced modeling techniques to highlight both the opportunities and challenges of their adoption in the U.S. domestic aviation network.

Why is it important?
While previous research has explored the isolated properties and performance characteristics of alternative aviation fuels, little focus has been dedicated to their integration at the fleet level and their operational implications across representative mission profiles.
Perspectives
I see this work as an important step in quantifying both the tradeoffs and benefits of introducing alternative fuels into today’s U.S. domestic aviation fleet. By focusing on the influence of fuel-specific properties, it provides insights that can guide strategic decisions and help move the industry toward more sustainable air transportation.
