What is it about?
This paper is aimed at describing the A330-MRTT Automatic Air to Air Refueling (A3R) Flight control laws design. It also contains the difficulties found during the process, lessons learnt and future perspectives. It also includes the developement and certification flights performed during these years.

Why is it important?
The automatic air to air refueling operation improves the overall air to air refueling operation, as it provides more precise and faster contacts than an average boom operator. Besides, it allows the operator to only focus on the operation safety and fatigue reduces dramatically. It must be noted that the A3R also reduces training to new operators, since the automatic algorithm moves the stick through the follow-up.
Perspectives
The air to air refueling is a very complex operation where two vehicles join in air. Thus, implementing the cutting-edge technology is a must.
