My paper investigates the measured noise data in the engine intra-stage (the duct section between the rotor and the outlet guide vane (OGV)) to estimate the relative contribution of the two noise sources and thereby find out the dominant noise contributor.

Why is it important?

Existing approaches to measuring the fan broadband (BB) noise have focussed on the measurements in the engine intake and bypass ducts primarily because these sections transmit the in-duct noise to the far-field. However, the drawback of measurements in these two sections is that they do not allow the balance between the fan (rotor) and the OGV to be determined. The engine intra-stage, on the other hand, is particularly suitable for predicting the relative contribution of the rotor and the OGV BB noise sources. In this paper, we consider the noise measurements made in the engine intra-stage of a model turbofan engine and separate out the rotor and the OGV contributions. It has been shown here for the first time that the BB noise from the OGV dominates the rotor BB noise by around 6-8 dB across the broadband frequency range of interest, thereby revealing that the OGV is almost twice as loud as the rotor!

Perspectives

I presented my research paper at the AIAA Aviation Forum and Exposition held in San Diego, CA from 12-16 June 2023. I am extremely pleased to write that my paper won the best student paper in aeroacoustics amongst a list of 45 entries. The work presented in this paper addresses a long-standing problem in fan noise research. For the first time in more than 50 years of fan noise research, this paper quantifies the BB levels of the rotor and the OGV, and has demonstrated the preponderance of the OGV as the loudest noise source in the aero-engine. This finding implies that the noise mitigation strategies must now be directed at reducing the leading-edge interaction noise at the OGV in order to bring down the overall noise of the aero-engine.
