What is it about?

As an aerofoil stalls, the amount of lift it produces first decreases before increasing again. We show a new method for predicting this behaviour, and how it can be used to improve the accuracy of other simulations. We do this by adding a new region to existing models, specifically targeting this "post-stall" area.

Why is it important?

By offering an improved method for predicting the lift in this region of angle of attack, many different simulations can be improved. The distribution of forces across wings, wind turbines, or rotor blades can be generated with higher fidelity, which allows for more precise modelling of thrust and structural loads. This is has benefits for power generation, propulsion, acoustic, and structural calculations.
