What is it about?

Transonic shock buffet on wings limits the operating range of commercial aircraft. The phenomenon is not yet fully understood but is affected by structural characteristics of the wing. We performed wind-tunnel experiments to prove these important effects, in particular on the point of its occurence.

Why is it important?

Transonic shock buffet can lead to high loads on the wing structure, which is a reason for the limitation of the flight conditions of commercial aircraft. The point of occurence of the phenomenon depends on the characteristics of the wing structure. Modern methods of wing design and construction come with varying characteristics and, consequently, it has become very important to understand, how these affect the occurence of the phenomenon.
